COCOCEA render with citrus cone and collection bowl
“My wrists hurt every morning. 20 minutes just for this.”
“The mess is the most annoying thing about this task.”
“Mixer makes it gritty. I strain three times.”

From a home visit and follow-up call

Brief
Problem
Daily coconut and citrus prep causes wrist strain, floor posture, inconsistent yield and mess. No single product solves all of it.
Goal
A compact semi-automatic countertop appliance: minimal effort, zero mess, under five minutes.
User
Urban and semi-urban home cooks preparing 2–3 meals a day in kitchens under 60 sq ft.
Constraints
Max 25 cm wide, food-safe BPA-free parts, 220 V, easy to clean, fits a standard kitchen shelf.

Outcome

Talking to a home cook first meant the requirement list came from her mornings, and every spec on the concept traces back to one of her complaints.

The full story
01 · Field

One morning, five observations

A home visit and a follow-up call with a home cook in Bengaluru showed the whole routine: gripping coconut with both hands on a floor-mounted scraper, shreds everywhere, the same spot scraped four or five times, lemon juice spilling when the grip slipped, and the mixer avoided because it makes coconut gritty.

02 · Market

Nothing does both

Floor scrapers give perfect texture but cause floor posture and wrist strain. Mixers are fast but gritty, loud (≈90 dB) and need straining three times. Manual squeezers tire you out in batches. Electric scrapers don’t do citrus or contain the mess. The gap: no Indian product combines coconut and citrus, sealed, standing, at an affordable price.

03 · Modes

Two modes, one base

Coconut mode: a serrated SS304 cone twist-locks on, light pressure, a sealed 400 ml chamber, a fine strainer for milk, under two minutes. Juice mode: swap to a ribbed citrus cone, the motor reverses for maximum yield, seeds are trapped below.

What I learned

Takeaways

  1. 01Sorting requirements into must-have, performance and delight kept the concept honest about priorities.
  2. 02One home visit gave better requirements than any amount of guessing.
  3. 03Every number on a spec sheet should trace back to a user complaint.
  4. 04Embodiment means deciding real things: motor, materials, safety cut-offs, cleaning time, price.
